Defining the Mission of African S.M.I.L.E. through Our Acts and Deeds:

Access To Healthcare:
A Top Priority

Access to healthcare is a problem in the United States. Imagine for a moment, however, what access to healthcare must be like in Eastern Africa. Access to a hospital may require a journey on foot or by bicycle of a day or more….that is if you are strong enough for the trip and fortunate enough to be able to afford basic care.

Curbing the Spread of AIDS and Other Infectious Diseases
It is no secret that malaria and the spread of AIDS in Africa are enormous problems. It is predicted that the AIDS epidemic will peak in Tanzania in 2010. Adult males are not culturally monogamous and unknowingly spread the virus among multiple sexual partners. Many are infected with AIDS through tainted blood transfusions used in the treatment of malaria.

Building Infrastructure: Providing for Clean Water
Through affiliations with local individuals and other organizations doing important work in the region (such as Outreach Africa), African S.M.I.L.E. is committed to supporting efforts providing clean water to the people of the region.

We have supported the establishment of a program aimed at maintaining a series of 57 wells and bore holes that naturally provide the clean drinking water so desperately needed.

WHO WE ARE

OUR MISSION:To promote the principles of

African S.M.I.L.E. is a Lutheran humanitarian relief organization that provides a helping hand to the economically and socially disadvantaged region of Singida in the East African country of Tanzania. Because of an ongoing drought, the health issues wrought by AIDS, malaria, chronic hunger, and the lack of educational and employment opportunities, the economy in the Singida region is stagnant. African S.M.I.L.E. partners with grassroots efforts in the Singida region to help alleviate these plagues.

Since 2002, through partnerships with other organizations and individuals in the region, African S.M.I.L.E. has been involved with many projects, including: building a secondary school, a dental clinic, a church, and living quarters for the hospital’s physicians.

In the effort to help local communities move towards self-sufficiency:

CURRENT PROJECTS INCLUDE

  • Expanding The Secondary School
  • Building An Isolation Medical Ward On The
    Iambi Hospital Campus
(Main Hospital Serving The Northeastern Section Of The Singida Region)
  • Building Dormitories For The Nursing School
  • Funding Micro-Enterprise Projects
    Such As Basket Weaving

Promoting Faith and Spreading His Word

African S.M.I.L.E. does not hide from its spiritual roots. We believe in spreading the word of Christ and educating others in the principles of Christianity. African S.M.I.L.E. is building a chapel on the Iambi Hospital Campus that will double as an educational facility and meeting place for hospital personnel.
